Stevens Engineers & Constructors has an excellent opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated Field Safety Coordinator to join our Chicagoland Operations Team. This individual will be responsible for assisting the Operations Safety Manager and Project Managers in planning, coordinating, implementing, and maintaining health and safety at field offices and project worksites. The ideal candidate will be results driven; have a client-focused approach; work well independently and as part of the project team; and be willing to travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Screen projects and project sites before work commences, identifying safety-related risks.

Inspect active project sites to evaluate ongoing work conditions to guarantee compliance

Work with project management teams and field workers to implement and device solutions to safety-related issues on project sites.

Investigate specific incidents and complaints to identify improvement strategies.

Present safety information to employees and management.

Apply knowledge related to construction workplace hazards and accident prevention on the job sites.

Communicate with external resources such as hospitals, local fire departments, and rescue teams, so that the proper emergency personnel are available.

Review accident reports and document accidents using the proper forms and protocols, inspect facilities.

Engage in worker safety orientation and training.

Conduct tests of environmental and workplace quality factors to comply with Federal, State and local regulations regarding air quality and other potential hazards.

Research and present data related to employee accidents and hazards.

Install or oversee the installation of safety devices and protective equipment.

Lead workshops and interventions to improve safety behaviors and equipment usage.

Inspect machinery and safety devices to ensure their proper operation and worker protection.

Completion of documentation associated with safety inspections, accident/incident follow-up, employee safety orientation and training.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, managers, subcontractors, and clients.

Required Skills

Good Communication Skills - the ability to communicate effectively both written and oral.

Good listening skills – the ability to listen effectively and receive feedback from the employee perspective without passing judgment.

Knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations relating to the specific trade or activity being managed.

Expertise in the specific skilled trade or type of work the company does will assist the construction safety manager in being able to design and implement solutions for the company.

Excellent time management, prioritization, and organizational skills.

Proactive, with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to resolve project issues or conflicts.

Proficiency in use of a personal computer and software programs such as MS Excel, Word, and Outlook, Predictive Solutions software.

Provide a strong presence at assigned job sites.

The ideal candidate will have estimating experience for industrial construction projects in the steel, chemical, power, and gas & oil markets for the purpose of bidding on projects or negotiating contracts to perform the construction work. The Estimator position is responsible for creating accurate and complete estimates, based on both conceptual design ideas and complete design documents.

Key Responsibilities

Develops scope for bid packages after reading, reviewing, and studying construction documents (specifications, plans, addendums, RFIs) for the purpose of understanding the design intent and constructability of the project.

Prepares estimates with the proper level of detail for all design stages: Conceptual, Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents.

Assists with maintaining the estimating cost data base to ensure costs are up to date.

Consults with clients, project team members, subcontractors, and material suppliers to discuss and formulate estimates, effect cost reductions, and resolve issues.

Studies specifications to assist the operations team in planning procedures for construction on basis of starting and completion times and staffing requirements for each phase of construction.

Researches construction documents and analyzes specifications to determine estimated costs.

Works with the operations team throughout the preconstruction process in reviewing plans and specifications for constructability issues and determining general requirements on the project.

Reviews design documents for proper information to receive accurate pricing from subcontractors and suppliers, generates acceptable value engineering ideas, and prepares life-cycle costing.

Prepares quantity take-offs and estimates costs of materials, labor, and use of equipment required to fulfill all provisions of the contract.

Understands how to create proper bid packages and works with the design team on the information required in each package to assure complete bids and giving the field team the right information needed to start construction or maintain the project schedule.

Reviews subcontractor and supplier bids for conformity to contract requirements and determines acceptable bids.

Presents and explains project budgets to clients, designers, and operations teams.

Maintains files of working documents as back-up for the estimate, including current information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.

Supports other estimating unit personnel as needed, which would include but not limited to assistance with computer work and preparation of one or more discipline estimates.

Researches, negotiates and prepares purchase orders and subcontracts for awarded projects, including obtaining the necessary insurance requirements.

Prepares internal job setup documentation, including Award of Contract form, code of accounts, quantity sheet and copy estimate file.

Participates in pre-job meeting with project management personnel.

 

Skill Factors

Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in Construction Science, Building Science or Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is preferred.

Five (5) years of professional experience in the construction industry, with three (3) years of experience in industrial construction estimating.

Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Access, and construction / project management software packages (i.e., InEight, Primavera P6, and Viewpoint).

Ability to think analytically; demonstrate effective time management skills; ability to prioritize responsibilities and multi-task in fast-paced environment.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to understand and communicate basic construction concepts.

 Exhibit strong Interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with accuracy and precise attention to detail.

Ability to build solid working relationships with team members, vendors, and customers.

 Demonstrate a strong work ethic - results driven.

Determining the total cost of materials, equipment, utilities, and labor for construction projects.

Researching construction documents and analyzing specifications.

Preparing estimates for planning, organizing, and scheduling project work.

Managing pre-qualification and pre-bid submissions.

Preparing estimates to meet project goals, such as setting work hours, sequencing tasks, obtaining materials, and securing the best deals with vendors and subcontractors.

Ensuring that relevant documents and budgets are submitted before a bid deadline.

Regularly reporting to Management and keeping clients updated on the project status.

Formulating contingency plans and effectively managing risks that might impact cost and time estimates.

Keeping track of the latest estimating technology and industry-related techniques.

Collaborating with other teams, conducting site visits, and providing other services, like bid deliveries, when required.
